A meningitis outbreak in Yobe State has claimed the lives of at least 20 boarding school students, with hundreds more infected.

Mohammed Sani Idriss, the State Education commissioner, revealed that six secondary schools have been affected, resulting in the tragic loss of 20 lives out of 473 confirmed cases.

According to Idriss, the epicentre of the outbreak is Potiskum City, with Government Technical College experiencing the highest toll of 17 deaths.

He stated that measures, including medical surveillance, isolation centres, and emergency care facilities, had been implemented across affected schools.

However, he disclosed that the situation was under control as no new cases have been reported in the past two days, with 370 recovered patients discharged, indicating some semblance of control over the situation.
