A fire that broke out at midnight has resulted in the destruction of more than 50 shops and property valued at N150 million in Yan Katako Market, located in the Rijiyar Lemu area of Fagge Local Government Area in Kano State.

The blaze, which erupted around 1 a.m., completely engulfed several shops at Yankatako Market, as disclosed by Saminu Abdullahi, the spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service.

The distress call originated from the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), prompting a swift response from firefighting personnel who managed to contain the fire and prevent further damage.

“We received a distress call at about 02:00 a.m. from the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) that there was a fire outbreak at Yankatako market. We quickly mobilized our personnel to the scene and put out the fire so as not to spread to other shops,” Mr Abdullahi said.

The midnight fire outbreak resulted in the destruction of over 50 shops and property, estimated at N150 million. Approximately 25 shops were completely razed down, with several others either touched or partially affected.

Alhaji Mamuda Abdullahi, the market chairman, lamented the loss of livelihood for many traders whose shops contained plywood, foam, spray machines, chairs, and carpentry tools. The cause of this fire remains undetermined. The chairman commended the prompt response of the Kano State Fire Service personnel, who were able to contain the fire around 02:00 am.

The Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident. He emphasized the team’s efforts to extinguish the fire by 2 am.

As traders grapple with the aftermath, the market chairman appealed for support from the state government and philanthropists to aid those who have lost their means of livelihood in these unfortunate incidents.
