The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) revealed that its operatives intercepted trucks transporting food items in the Kajji community along the Sokoto-Kebbi road, bound for the Niger Republic via the Kebbi border.

Additionally, the NCS confiscated a shipment of sex-enhancement drugs valued at N19.6 million in Sokoto State.

Mr. Kolapo Oladeji, the Coordinating Comptroller, disclosed these seizures during a media briefing in Sokoto, stating that they were carried out by a joint border patrol team, sector IV.

Despite the scarcity of food items and the resultant high cost of living in Nigeria, Oladeji expressed concern that some individuals were still engaging in the smuggling of food to neighboring countries.

He reiterated the NCS’s commitment to thwarting such activities, emphasizing their determination to apprehend smugglers and disrupt their operations. Oladeji issued a stern warning, stating that those caught would face the full force of the law. He said:

“We will leave no stone unturned to block food smuggling out of the country because of the current situation in the country.

“We all know that prices of food items have skyrocketed because of the activities of some Nigerians. Our people are hungry, but they prefer to take the food to other countries despite the border closures imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).”
