Ibadan Explosion: Seyi Makinde Gives Update on J16, Omits ‘Illegal Miners’

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has expressed gratitude to all those who participated in the search and rescue operations at Ground Zero over the past week, particularly acknowledging the efforts of first responders from OYSEMA, medical personnel, and security agencies.

A press statement released Thursday on the Governor’s official handle emphasized the administration’s dedication to ensuring justice for the victims, stating that details of those affected were still being compiled and comprehensive steps by the government to support victims in rebuilding their lives would be announced.

Acknowledgement was given to the team from the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NNRA) for measuring normal background radiation doses at the epicentre. The speaker also thanked geologists from the University of Ibadan, led by two Professors, who were conducting seismic measurements.

Residents of Oyo State were reminded to call 615 free of charge if they observed anything suspicious in their communities, with an emphasis on the importance of reporting to the authorities for prompt action.

Seyi Makinde also mentioned that structural integrity tests on buildings around Ground Zero were still in progress, as well as the implementation of work on short-, medium-, and long-term measures to support the victims, tighten security, and restore the areas affected.

Meanwhile, the governor earlier assured residents of Bodija and citizens of apprehending the alleged “illegal miners” who stored substantial amounts of explosives in residential areas, yet in his recent update, he omits progress on the report submitted to the President.
