“We Are Hungry,” Lagosians to Tinubu

A wave of discontent swept through Idumota market on Friday as President Bola Tinubu’s convoy traversed the bustling streets of Idumota market.

In a scene captured in a video trending on social media, residents and traders, engulfed by economic hardships, voiced their grievances, shouting in Yoruba, “Ebi npa wa oo,” translating to “We are hungry.”

The atmosphere was tense as traders lining both sides of the road declined to hail the president, choosing instead to articulate their struggles, attributing their woes to government policies.

Despite heavy security accompanying the presidential convoy, the grievances echoed loud and clear.

The palpable frustration stemmed from the ongoing economic challenges plaguing the citizens.

Scarce cash flow coupled with soaring prices of essential commodities, notably the skyrocketing cost of petrol following the removal of fuel subsidies, has inflicted hardship on the populace.

The government’s announced palliative measures, aimed at cushioning the impact, have failed to assuage the deepening economic strain felt by the residents.

This discontent has manifested in the form of vocal protests during the president’s visit, underscoring the widespread discontent and dissatisfaction with the current economic conditions.

The presence of the long presidential convoy also served as a reason to amplify the discontent and frustration expressed by the aggrieved residents and traders.

As the nation grapples with economic challenges, the voices of dissent from Lagos Island should serve as a reminder of the urgency to address the economic hardships faced by ordinary citizens, highlighting the disconnect between the government’s policies and the lived realities of the people.
