In response to a widely circulated video showing Special Constables Jimoh Lukman and Kareem Fatai extorting money from a Dutch tourist along the Iseyin-Oyo Road, the Oyo State Police Command swiftly acted, dismissing both officers for their unethical conduct.

Commissioner’s Decisive Action

On October 21, 2023, at the Police headquarters, Commissioner of Police Adebola Hamzat took prompt action. He swiftly dismissed the officers, stripping them of their uniforms and declaring, “They cease to be members of the special constabulary with immediate effect.” This decisive move aimed to deter future misconduct.

National Orientation Agency Commends Police Action

In a statement on Friday, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) applauded the police’s decisive steps. Director General Issa-Onilu praised the dismissal, condemning the officers’ behaviour. He emphasized, “A real Nigerian is honest, dedicated, courteous, and hardworking.” The NOA highlighted the importance of upholding these values.

Tourist’s Report and NOA’s Stand

The agency commended the tourist for reporting the incident, asserting that demanding bribes goes against the country’s laws. Issa-Onilu reiterated that the officers’ actions did not represent the true spirit of Nigeria.

Public Reaction and Netizens’ Concerns

While the NOA supports the dismissal, netizens on X (formerly Twitter) questioned the severity of the punishment. They asked, “Is this not too harsh?” This sentiment raises valid concerns, considering other serious crimes like police brutality that have often been overlooked in the past.
