Today, July 31, 2024, Nigeria is mourning the loss of an iconic singer, Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away at 72. 

Onwenu, renowned for her contributions to Nigerian music and art, played a pivotal role in its commercial success and paved the way for future female artists.

Onwenu’s music, which defined the 1980s and 1990s, inspires new generations. Her songs celebrated the Nigerian culture and embraced her Igbo heritage, resonating deeply with audiences. She was honoured in Burna Boy’s Grammy-winning 2020 album ‘Twice As Tall’ through a track named after her, highlighting her stance as a don in the music industry.

In 2016, Onwenu collaborated with iconic rapper Phyno on “Ochie Dike Mama,” a song performed in Igbo that praised motherhood. Her voice, timeless and powerful, carried the chorus and bridge, showcasing her continued relevance in contemporary music.

1. Wait for Me (Feat. King Sunny Ade)

“If you love me, you go wait for me” was the famous line from this 1989 classic with the Grammy-nominated Juju music legend King Sunny Ade. Released in 1989, this duet with King Sunny Ade became a commercial hit, symbolising her status as one of Nigeria’s biggest pop stars.

2. One Love

This song was a timeless anthem. “One Love” spread the message of peace, love, and unity among Nigerians. It remains a staple on Nigerian radio and TV.

3. You and I

“You and I” was another testament that Onwenu was not all about songs of national unity and pride. This love song, blending funk and jazz and influenced by pidgin and Igbo lyrics, was featured as the soundtrack for the Nollywood movie “Conspiracy” by Chimdi Chiama in the late 90’s. It still resonates with people today.

4. Ekwe

This fusion of funk and Igbo folk music, “Ekwe”, which tells the story of a persistent suitor, was released in 1984. It was performed by Chidinma Ekile of the hit song “Kedike” during MTN Project Fame in 2010, where Onwenu was a judge and J’Dess during The Voice Nigeria in 2018.

5. Bia Nulu

Onwenu was also able to craft gospel tunes that caused people to lean back to their maker. In this gospel tune, Onwenu calls on God to listen to the struggles of His people, reflecting her deep spirituality.
